Selecting Counter Board

Libra Composite Embossing Board*

A soft self-adhesive multi layered laminate, where pressure from a blind embossing die is required to form a counterforce.

Once the counterforce is formed the access areas are cut away. Overlay film can be applied on top of the counterforce to strengthen and protect it from damage while embossing. This product is only suitable for blind embossing onto 50 to 180g paper and board and is a very fast system.

Taurus Embossing Counterforce Board:

Attach a suitable size piece of epoxy glass fibre board or phenolic board to the make ready plate of your machine.

Cut a suitable size piece of embossing counter board and apply a double sided tape on one side.

Remove release liner from the bonded double sided tape and place the embossing counter board over the fibreglass board or phenolic board, and press down firmly.

Run the press through one impression to make sure the embossing counter board is lined up correctly.

Only if required, wet the embossing counter board with water using a damp cloth or a hand trigger spray bottle. The water softens the fibres of the board enabling the embossing counter board to shape itself to the female die.

Run the press to make 5 to 6 impressions onto the embossing counterboard. On completion of the run an exact male copy of the female embossing die will be produced.

The edges of the die and counterforce will show on the substrate, so chamfering the edges of both will prevent that from happening.

Once the embossing counter board is completed, the new counter should be protected by placing a piece of soft blotting paper over it.

This product is white in colour.

Aries Embossing Board:*

A board suitable for low resolution short run blind embossing. Wet the board and press an embossing die onto the board a number of times and this will create a counterforce. This material is suitable for platen or cylinder machine.

This product is Yellow in colour.

Polymer Plates – Counterboard:

When photoengraving (acid etching), the existing film can be used in conjunction with a hard sheet photopolymer material to create a perfect, reusable photopolymer counter for even the most intricate plates. Eliminates hand cutting; greatly saves make ready time. Two types are available: Steel-Backed Photopolymer counterboard and a Polyester-Backed Photopolymer. Sheets are sold individually and are available in different thicknesses, harnesses’ and sizes.

Phenolic Systems:

Make your own dups. from original metal embossing die masters using the phenolic matrix board system. Bakelite duplicates can be produced in-house, at a lower cost, quickly and with great accuracy. Dups. are a perfect low cost solution for producing multiple embossing dies for repeat images on a print run.

  • Cut suitable phenolic boards to size.
  • Place phenolic boards in the moulding unit.
  • Place and spray suitable release materials onto and under the phenolic boards in moulding unit.
  • Spray the female metal die with release spray and then place image side onto the phenolic boards.
  • Place the correct bearers on either side on the moulding tray.
  • Slowly bring moulding press to the required pressure.
  • Allow the matrix board to cure under heat for the designated time.
  • Release the pressure.
  • Remove from the moulding press and allow to cool.
  • Trim off the access around the phenolic board.
  • You now have a male duplicate.

Repeat the process substituting the female metal die with the male duplicate and mould. The results will be a female duplicate and repeat making female duplicates till you manufacture the quantity required.
